What You Need:

A deck of cards

What You Do:

1. Have your child shuffle the deck. Explain that aces = 1 and all face cards = 10.
2. Ask her to create a row of 5 cards, face up. Then place two additional cards face up on top of each of the cards already on the table. There will be a row of 5 cards across, 3 down.
3. Set the rest of the cards in a pile to the side.
4. The objective of the game is to try to get each row of three cards to equal a sum of a multiple of 10. For example, if one row has a 7, 2, Ace, it is added as 7 + 2 + 1 = 10. Or, 8, 5, 7, is added as 8 + 5 + 7 = 20. If she can find any combo that’s a multiple of 10, she can clear the cards and deal out a new row from the deck.
5. If she doesn’t see any rows with cards that add up to a sum of multiples of 10, encourage her to rearrange the cards to create multiple sums, trying to eliminate as many cards as she can before dealing new cards.
6. Continue removing stacks of 3 cards until the entire deck is depleted and all of the stacks of cards are gone.
7. To make the game more challenging, try finding sums of different multiple bases. For example, if you use 6 as a base, sums would have to add to 6, 12, 18 and so on. This will encourage the learning of basic multiplication as well
