No one prepares you for fatherhood.
You can read books, ask questions, but no one can prepare you for what you’ve got yourself in for.
Before the birth you find yourself looking at other parents, judging them, telling yourself you will do things better and at times learning from them or trying to.
That first moment you hold your child in your arms, you’re scared, scared of holding too tight, scared of losing grip but inside and outside you can’t stop smiling.
Then comes the bottle feeding when you’re worried how hard to tap their back within failing efforts to bring their wind up.
Inevitably, there’s the nappy changing, after a few lessons you think you’ve got the hang of it, become a Jedi master, only to unwrap an exploded bomb that’s everywhere, somehow ends up even on you.
No one tells you about the times, holding your child and you’re covered in their vomit but you do not care, too concerned with their tears rolling down their cheek.
The screaming, kicking tantrums when you ashamedly briefly wonder, “Were those two minutes in the sack really worth it?”
Regardless of the tears, and especially for the smiles, it’s worth it.
I’m almost three years in and at times I wonder have I learnt right? Am I getting it wrong?
I guess I feel like the student, learning every day.
