It isn’t easy to take an idea and transform it into a successful business. Many people have dreams of becoming their own boss and becoming financially independent. Dreams of breaking free from the 9-5 grind and making an impact in the world. Unfortunately for most, it stops there; just a dream and nothing more. There are many reasons why people don’t take that first step to achieving their dreams.

  1. Letting Other Peoples’ Opinions Control Your Actions.

For many the path to failure is letting other peoples’ opinions of them or their idea control them.  They are so afraid of looking stupid or ridiculed that they don’t even bother taking that first step. Some live in a microcosm where they were always told they weren’t good enough so they become approval whores.

I personally was at a point where I would let the things people said about me control my actions. I was told things like “You’re setting yourself up for failure”, “Do you leave your brain at home” and “You are dumb and will never amount to much”. Because of this, I have been often afraid to tell people about any new endeavors or ideas I had because I was afraid of looking dumb.  I always second guessed myself and often froze because of my fear of rejection.

Stop caring what others think of you.

Taking a risk means not caring what others think of you or your ideas. How many entrepreneurs were told “that will never work” yet continued on their path to eventual success? If you don’t take a chance someone else will and they will succeed because they didn’t let other peoples’ opinions of them dictate their actions.

  1. The Fear of Trying Something New.

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”  Albert Einstein

Tony Robbins once told a story about the fly that repeatedly ran into the glass door trying to get outside. Over and over it would hit the glass expecting a different result, but never reaching the goal getting out. Some people will spend years doing the same thing and expect happiness and success to magically appear. They are too afraid to step outside their comfort zone and try anything new. They are like the fly, doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting a different result.  We will work the same miserable job for years, hoping that someday it will all change.

  1. Having The Fear of Failure

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”  Michael Jordan

You cannot be afraid to fail. I was once told that “The fear of failure causes more people to fail than failing ever has”.  Whenever I listen to a successful entrepreneur being interviewed, they rarely talk about their success, but often talk about how they failed over and over but never gave up. You may need to take a step back and look at things differently before you get to that “ah ha” moment.  In order to succeed, you must get out of your comfort zone.

Believe In Yourself And Your Abilities.

There will always be people that either motivate you or tear you down. I was once told that “the same people that praise you today will criticize you tomorrow”. I once had a friend that told me he loved the graphic design work I did for him and his client and we worked well together. Then one day I heard him talking to another friend of his and he referred to me as an “amateur”.  I decided at that point to never do work for him again.  I could have let that affect me, but I know I’m a good designer and had other repeat customers that loved my work.  I could have let those words stop me in my tracks, but I didn’t.

Some of us live in a microcosm of humiliation and regret. We let past insults and pain affect our present and future, thus eliminating any chance of success and happiness. Believe in yourself and your dreams. Don’t let the opinions of others and fear dictate the course of your future. The only person stopping you from achieving your dreams is you. So get out of your way and make it happen!

Choose to Be Great.

One of my favorite documentaries and a great motivator for me is the History Channel’s “The Men that Built America”.  These were men who beat the odds, most starting with absolutely nothing, to build empires.  Here is a quick video about the traits of a great leader.  Watch and enjoy.
